Capturing the Magic: A Guide to Relaxed
and Candid Wedding Photos
Hi there lovelies, I'm Rebecca from Rebecca Jones Photography
I'm a wedding photographer covering the North West and I've had the absolute privilege of capturing the happiest days of couples lives for over 10 years now (wow, that makes me feel old!) I specialise in relaxed, countryside weddings - from farms, to country houses to marquees at family homes and everything in between - the more wellies and dogs the better!
I'm so excited to be here on Jenny's wonderful blog and I'm going to spill the beans on how to achieve those effortlessly relaxed and candid photos that truly reflect the love and joy of your special day! So if you're dreaming of a wedding day filled with genuine moments, laughter, and natural beauty, you're in the right place.
Embrace the Unscripted Magic
First things first, let's talk about those candid moments. You know, the unscripted laughs, stolen glances, and goofy grins that make your wedding day truly unique. Embracing these moments is the key to capturing photos that tell your love story exactly how it happened. If you want to look back through your wedding photos and for them to tell the story of your day from start to finish you need to choose a photographer with an approach that fits perfectly with you and the day that you have planned.
Traditional vs a Storytelling Approach to your Photography
So a little bit of background info for you. Traditional wedding photography generally involves lots of posing, direction from your photographer, standing in a lineup and smiling awkwardly at the camera until your jaw aches. If this isn't how you envisage yourself spending your wedding day, I would highly recommend opting for a storytelling or documentary style approach to your wedding photography. Put simply, a documentary photographer stays in the background all day, capturing your day as it happens, with little to no direction. You won't be aware of your photo being taken for the majority of the day, meaning that all the natural, beautiful moments are captured.
For me, a storytelling photographer primarily takes a documentary approach to the day, but also incorporates some family group shots, and also a little bit of time for some relaxed couples portraits. This is usually about an 80/20 split. I would describe myself as a storytelling photographer - although I don't love taking a long list of group photos, I think it is important to capture a small number of these images (as they are so lovely to look back on years down the road and remember when all your family members were together in that moment, and also lets be honest - these are the ones that the mums and grannies have framed on their walls!). I also think having some beautiful natural images of the two of you alone on your wedding day is really important too.
Less Posed, More You
While traditional poses have their charm, relaxed couples poses are much more natural and enjoyable for you, and the images are far more authentic too. Think about holding hands and taking a leisurely stroll, stealing a kiss under a beautiful tree, or simply enjoying a quiet moment or a giggle together. These poses not only look natural but also help you feel more at ease in front of the camera.
